Commander's Note and April Meeting Notes

Dear Legion Member,

First, I want to wish everyone a Happy Easter and Spring!

As the Legion's Close of the Books comes near in June 2006, we have had a good year with 103% paid dues. We now have 88 members, up from 85, and hope to grow more this fiscal year.

The VA has donated a van, with much help and hard work from Tony Cross, to transport Veterans to the VA Hospital and doctor visits. The van is being kept in Greenfield for use throughout Hancock County. Tony Cross is a member at Greenfield Legion. They are needing volunteer drivers, two days a week starting in June. Drivers can be paid $20 a day and must meet several simple formalities. For information, contact Tony at 213-777-9293 or Lori at 317-590-1988. This would be a great way to help out fellow Veterans.

Greenfield and Morristown posts are in need of volunteers to be on color guard and funeral details. They some time have two a week and come up short from the firing squad. If interested, contact me at Dave Espich at 317-861-6577.

Our meetings are the first Monday of Month at the Town Hall in New Palestine (the old 5/3 Bank).

Dates to remember:

May 20th - We'll be putting up flags through Main Street in New Palestine.

May 26th - At 1700, we'll meet at the New Palestine Cemetary south of SR 52 on Gem. We'll be putting Memorial flags on the graves of some 400 Veterans.

May 29th - Memorial Day Services will also be at the cemetary at 1300.

Please come and join us for these events.

Sincerely,
Dave Espich
Commander
Legion Post 182

MINUTES FOR MEETING ON 03APR06

Pledge of Allegiance
Call to Order
Reading of Minutes and Approved

Special Note: Vern Mattingly passed away recently

Introduction of Guests: Mrs. Becky Gains and Mrs. Barb Smith - Chamber of Commerce; Mr. Tim Miller - Member of Sugar Creek Parks Board.

Discussion of park this last fall of 88 acres being aquired at a cost of 1.8 million for the land. Exploring conceptial plans on park. $100,000 trail grant given. Future for park in initial planning stage. Coordination with IN DOT on SR 52 expansion into New Palestine; Access/Right of Way this spring to summer. Planning beginning fall of 2007, possible start of construction. Property leased this summer.

Would like input from post. Will be looking into coordinating Memorial space with the conceptual plans.

-Becky Gains questioned Tim about mixed messages between conflicting info on Chamber and Post 182 having primary access and frontage implimentation of plans. The issue was if the park was going to sell off frontage property to finance other construction.
-Bill Sevier mentioned the location and need for initial plan or any modification to provide a boulevard config.
-Becky Gains said, "The Memorial is a matter of pride for the community and if not placing it on SR 52 would be a shame."
-Norm asked who has final authority on how the park is planned and was told Township Trustii has the final say so.
-Jason Smith asked if there would be a lease or a deed for the parcel. No actual response.
-Barb Smith asked if the insurance would be incurred by the Parks Department or if the Post would carry.

Emphasis on public opinion and concepts; Parks Board, County and Community input should drive the various needs of the park. Parks Board meet quarterly and on event of emergency.

Needs of greenspace behind the gazeebo for large gatherings and performances; Counterpoint - traffic will make noise. Is this the right location?

Currently DO NOT have a cut onto SR 52 for the access. Will have to get approval from IN DOT.

Brad Sexton asked if all people were welcome to meeting. Answer is yes.

*Need to send a letter to Montgomery C.O. that comments on size and possible config.

-Becky Gains and Barb Smith discussion of flags.

Flag banners are in bad shape. Chamber/Beautification Comm./Amer. Legion working together is appreciated.

16 Welcome banners requested to be installed and set for 8Apr06 @ 1000.

Barb needs qty of flags to turn in; Dale will check into PWP count.

New Business
